Funny Women puts the funny into Christmas

Where else can you have a brilliant night out, with an amazingly varied comedy line up and in one of London’s hidden theatrical treasures? Funny Women celebrates Christmas on Monday 20th December at the New Players Theatre, previously the home of music hall and variety, snuck away under the arches of Charing Cross Station.

The show will feature a host of favourite acts from eight years of the Funny Women Awards and beyond, ranging from impressionists, musical comedy, magic, character acts, sketch and stand up.

Hosting this sensational evening of Christmas entertainment is Kate Smurthwaite, ‘Reminiscent of an irresponsible head girl’,and headlining will be the brilliant Kerri Godliman, as seen on BBC’s Live At the Apollo.

Comedy duo and winners of the 2010 Funny Women Awards, Thankless Child, will delight with their off the wall sketches and have you singing along like sailors in a sea shanty. Mandy Muden, described as ‘a female Tommy Cooper minus the fez’ will bring her hilarious mix of comedy and magic to the proceedings.

The show will also feature acts from this year’s and past Funny Women Awards. Rachel Parris, runner up in this year’s Awards combines her beautiful voice with her pithy take on love and ‘the musical’. Sarah Pascoe was runner up in the 2008 Funny Women Awards and has many TV credits to her name: “Very talented…bringing new life to the humour of misunderstandings.”

Gemma Whelanis the winner of the first ever Funny Women Variety Award, and will grace the stage with the delightful ponderings of her character ‘Chastity Butterworth’. Catch the wonderful Mae Martin before she heads back to Canada – named by NOW magazine as one of the ‘funniest people in Toronto’.

Katerina Vrana, will entertain with her big hair, even bigger personality, and her clever observations of life, politics and the weather. Kate O’Sullivan will take us on a speedy tour through ‘Celebville’ with her quick fire impressions of Lady GaGa in her new role as a supply teacher, Detective Inspector Cheryl Cole, newly qualified drugs counsellor, Lorraine Kelly and more.

Funds raised from the show will support the celebrations for 100 years of International Women’s Day on 8th March 2011 and a coalition of leading aid charities and organisations.

Funny Women will be amongst those celebrating International Women’s Day next year with a comedy extravaganza at KOKO in Camden.
